Mental health concerns impact individuals and families that social workers encounter in a wide range of service settings. This course aims to equip students to provide sensitive and effective services to clients by presenting material concerning a range of mental health concerns (including addictions) on a continuum from mild concerns to more severe mental illness. Students will also learn about mental health care systems and appropriate interventions to address difficulties linked with mental health and addictions. This course will focus on several mental health and addiction concerns commonly seen in practice settings, as well as the assessments and interventions conducted by social workers in different settings such as hospitals and community agencies, with attention to both the client and the client’s family and community. This course emphasizes the integration of research and theory with practice. Case studies, role plays/simulations, videos, small group exercises, and other types of learning techniques are incorporated throughout the course to enrich student learning.
