The course provides the learner with a critical understanding of the theories of diversity, tolerance and pluralism, as well as with an opportunity to examine how these can be applied in a practical context. In particular, the learner will examine the relevant theories and the importance of identity and the multiple dimensions of diversity in the global context.  It will also look at issues of diversity and how it is linked with marginalisation and oppression. The course explores how an inclusive and pluralistic perspective can influence the notion of development and highlights the implications for development practice, illustrated by the Ugandan and African context. The course also examines various methods that can be used to manage diversity for a pluralistic society, including in a work environment.
